Leigh Centurions 30 Huddersfield Giants 0
Leigh Centurions produced an outstanding defensive display that underpinned their second successive home win with an ultimately convincing display over the Giants at LSV.
Neil Jukes’s side ‘nilled’ the Giants to earn the club’s first nil in top-flight Rugby League since an 18-0 home win over Salford in January 1988.
The game was in the balance until the last quarter with the Centurions holding a 12-0 lead through first half tries by Adam Higson and Jamie Acton, both converted by Ben Reynolds.
But the Centurions crucially strung together 12 completed sets in a succession in a dominant finish to claim the spoils.
Sponsors Man of the Match Harrison Hansen showed outstanding athleticism to reach Josh Drinkwater’s grubber kick and touchdown for the clinching try 15 minutes from the end.
Reynolds then cut through the Giants defence for a fourth try before Sam Hopkins wrapped up a successful evening by blasting over in the last minute, Reynolds converting all five tries.
Leigh Centurions Head Coach Neil Jukes said: “To nil any side in Super League is an outstanding effort.
“We showed great desire in our defence and we had to be on the money against a team like Huddersfield who are full of proven Super League, NRL and international players.
“We needed to be aggressive in defence and we showed some good line speed and good contact.
“We came up with some big plays defensively and when we did things right we made things look very easy.
“There is something good growing within the team and wins like tonight give us a lot of belief as we continue on our journey.”
Birthday boy Danny Tickle was outstanding for the Centurions in a great team effort as Club Owner Derek Beaumont was able to celebrate his 47th birthday in style.
