Evans Halshaw Take The Spoils At The Leigh Centurions Golf Day

Neil Bassett’s Evans Halshaw team won the Major prize at the highly successful Leigh Centurions 2017 Golf Day presented by Slater and Gordon.

Long standing corporate sponsors and current kit sponsors, Evans Halshaw carried off the team prize and the four team members each won Callaway bags, caps and golf balls plus a voucher from Leigh Golf Club.

Evans Halshaw made it a double by also winning the par three tournament at the beautifully appointed Houghwood Golf Course.

Leigh Centurions sponsors, corporate guests, players and staff mixed in a wonderful atmosphere throughout the day superbly organised by Business Development Manager Neil Barker, whose son Tom was one of several local golf professionals to lend their support to the event.

The Inspire Children’s Services team, led by Houghwood member Paul Keogh were runners-up with JRs Taxis, captained by Dave Rowland in third place.

The longest drive, a phenomenal tee shot on 18 by Neale Foster, a Houghwood member who was part of Paul Keogh’s ICS team was rewarded with a custom fitting for the new Callaway Epic driver.

Main kit sponsors Cal Sameday cheerfully propped up the pile and ended up with signed cricket bats from former England captain Alastair Cook!

No less than a dozen golfers managed to beat PGA pro Nick Grime on the par three second hole and landed vouchers for the Raven Inn, Glazebury.

Tom Barker and Nick Grime were joined by Nick Solski and Paul Dickenson to make a quartet of local golf professionals whose support of the event was greatly appreciated.

The prizes for nearest the pin on the par three holes were kindly supplied by Dave Rowland – but no one managed an ace on 16 where a brand new Audi was up for grabs.

Neil Barker said: “The support of Slater and Gordon who presented this year’s event was magnificent and thanks to all the local companies who sponsored all 18 holes and other signs around the course.

“The Houghwood green staff had worked tirelessly to make the course in pristine condition and off the field Peter Turner and his staff ensured that everything ran perfectly.

“The day started with a wonderfully informative and enlightening address by top mind coach Karl Morris who has worked with major champions.

“Then Rob Brown’s amazing trick shot show (sponsored by Balmer Wilcock) was simply brilliant.

“The golf event was highly competitive yet played in a friendly spirit and involved a host of major corporate and commercial sponsors.

“It was great to see Centurions stars Martyn Ridyard, Jamie Acton, Ben Reynolds and Danny Tickle playing in a team and enjoying the challenge of the tough Houghwood course.

“Adam Higson played for Nick Solski’s Boomers and Swingers team and showed he has the potential to become a decent golfer once his rugby career is over.”

Neil Barker added: “After the golf there was a great VR presentation by club partners 02 hosted by Steve Harrison and Anthony Coucill ahead of the evening barbecue sponsored by Bents. Ron and Wendy Bent enjoyed their afternoon’s golf partnered with Brian Daniels and his wife.

“Former Leigh hero Tony Cottrell, a great favourite of mine as a player, will have been proud of his immaculate son Ben, who won the prize for the best dressed competitor.

“We had fantastic corporate support and Martin Wild from Callaway and Andy Ward from American Golf (www.americangolf.co.uk) among the many companies who donated magnificent prizes. Garry Schofield OBE, Great Britain’s most capped player, was among the distinguished guests.

“I’d also like to thank the following for their support with prizes: Steve Hamer (Titleist), Ben Squires (Royal Lytham and St Annes), Colin Burgess (Leyland), Peter Allan (Ashton in Makerfield), Carla White (Sycamores Golf Driving Range), Hallowed Golf Blackpool, Phil Archer, Golf Monthly, Southport Golf Hotel, 02 Leigh, Richard Waterfield, Phil Todoric, Peter Taylor, MTS, Peter Turner and Paul Dickenson (Houghwood).

“The sell out event really was a magnificent event day and in particular I’d like to thank Stephen Lintott, an ardent Leigh Centurions supporter from Slater and Gordon Business Legal Services and his colleagues for their tremendous support.”
