Leeds 22 – 14 Leigh

Leeds Rhinos edged out the Centurions for the second time this season to lift the Bev Risman Trophy at rainy Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

The former dual international, a distinguished player with both clubs, was guest of honour and presented the trophy to the Rhinos captain Danny McGuire after a scrappy contest between two tired teams littered with 26 penalties, the count finishing 14-12.

With both teams playing their fourth games in 13 days Rhinos, 17-14 winners at LSV in February, strengthened their top four hopes as again Neil Jukes’s side was left to reflect on what might have been.

Adam Cuthbertson crashed over on the left for the Rhinos’ opening try and Tom Briscoe finished off an overlap on the right as the Rhinos built an early 8-0 lead.

But Matty Dawson continued his outstanding attacking form by scoring twice in the first half leaving Joel Moon’s effort, after he leapt highest to collect a pin-point Rob Burrow kick to separate the sides at half-time.

Dawson’s first try followed great skill by Matty Fleming to commit the defence after a Ryan Hampshire 40/20 kick created the momentum. His second was a great finish to a Josh Drinkwater kick just 30 seconds before the interval; his seventh try in his last five games.

Leigh played 20 minutes of the second half with 12 men after Antoni Maria and Dayne Weston each spent ten minutes in the sin bin for late challenges on McGuire.

After Liam Sutcliffe extended Rhinos’ lead with a penalty following Maria’s yellow card, McGuire’s grubber kick created the game clinching try for Cuthertson just before the hour-mark.

Sutcliffe failed with two further penalty attempts and Leigh fought back strongly in the closing stages. Eloi Pelissier had a try disallowed nine minutes from time but the visitors’ persistence was rewarded when Cory Paterson put the finishing touches to a Hampshire kick in the dying seconds.
