Warrington 50 – 10 Leigh

Tom Lineham led Warrington’s victory charge with four tries as rock bottom Leigh conceded 50pts for the first time this season.

The Wolves winger scored two tries in each half as last season’s beaten grand finalists and Challenge Cup runners-up rediscovered their attacking fluency to keep alive their faint hopes of avoiding the Qualifiers.

With two games to go Leigh trail Widnes by one point at the bottom and are already condemned to having only three home games out of seven in the Qualifiers as they attempt to save their Betfred Super League lives come August.

Tries from Ryan Atkins, Ashton Sims, and Lineham’s brace saw the hosts 24-0 ahead before Ben Reynolds reduced the arrears with an individual try just before half-time.

Ben Pomeroy scored on his Wolves debut, Lineham completed his hat-trick and Jack Hughes crossed to extend the Wolves lead further before Matty Dawson scored his 12th try of the campaign for the visitors.

But Lineham’s fourth try and a late Declan Patten effort saw the Wolves comfortably reach the half century.

Danny Tickle made his 400th Super League appearance- a fantastic achievement for a fine player.

Dan Mortimer and Samisoni Langi made their Leigh debuts but in such an abject team performance had few opportunities to shine.

Leigh Centurions head coach Neil Jukes said: “There were not many positives to take from that, just that we took no injuries. We’ve never really been battered but from minute one we were second best in all departments. We have to accept we were out-enthused.

“I think some people have had decent knocks for us this year but tonight the harder they tried the worse they got.

“We’ve just got to try and find consistency so that when we hit the ground running in the Middle 8s we do so throughout.

“I thought Mortimer had some nice touches, but sometimes tried a little too hard.

“Both halves could have managed the game a bit better with our kicking but it’s difficult when the forwards are not on the front foot.”
