LCT Ex-Services Breakfast Club Is One Year Old This Month

Monday 10th July marked the one-year anniversary of our Ex-forces monthly breakfast club and we were extremely excited that Mr Tom Boardman (Second World War veteran and Far East POW) joined us with his son Ron for the celebrations.

Mr Boardman has supported the Leigh Centurions and LCT’s work with the veterans in the Borough from its inception two years ago when both Mr Boardman and the late Mr Tommy Sale MBE witnessed the Club and charity signing the armed forces covenant at the LSV stadium.

Tom spent three years behind bars in appalling conditions in Thailand during the Second World War. He contracted malaria 32 times during his incarceration and his weight plummeted to 6st, but he kept the spirits up of his fellow captured soldiers by entertaining them with a ukulele he made from ‘old Red Cross boxes and used telegraph wires’ which is now kept in the Imperial War Museum North, Salford.

LCT General Manager Hannah Forbes said: “At the first breakfast club 12 months ago we had a small group of ex-forces come together over a brew and bacon ‘butty’. It has become the flagship event in Leigh Community Trust LCT forces programme and an important event in the ex-forces calendar within the local community, with over 45 people attending each month.

“The event is for ex-service, current serving personnel and their families, and we welcome any ex-services to come along for a chat and a butty and a very warm welcome from our team of ex-servicemen and ex-players.”

David Drury, Lead Armed Forces Officer for LCT Forces said of the Breakfast clubs: “It’s a great opportunity to meet likeminded individuals who can offer support, share experiences, listen and enjoy some good company. Monday was a celebration for all the friends and support we have had over the last 12 months and we hope to continue that moving forward into 2017-2018. Having Mr Boardman attend the breakfast was just the icing on the cake for us and we all spent the morning captivated by his recollections of his life.”

Tom and the rest of the ex-services community at LCT and the Centurions would like to invite all ex-services to the next breakfast held every first Monday of the month. The next one will take place at the LSV Stadium on Monday 7th August, 10.30am-12.30pm. For more information please contact dave@leighcommunitytrust.co.uk or call 01942 497 847. We look forward to seeing you there.
