Leigh 40 – 6 Halifax

Leigh Centurions earned their third win of the Qualifiers and boosted their points difference with an eight try victory over Halifax at LSV.

Wingers Mitch Brown and James Clare scored five tries between them to spearhead the Centurions’ battle for Super League survival.

But Leigh were left sweating on injuries to Cory Paterson and Samisoni Langi. Paterson went off with an arm injury and Langi suffered an ankle injury in the last play of the game and was stretchered off.

Ben Crooks made his return after injury way ahead of schedule to boost Leigh’s back line.

The Centurions were 10-0 up after 16 minutes after Clare went over in the corner and Ben Reynolds started and finished an incisive move.

Brown scored his first try in the corner but Halifax prop Mitch Cahalane ploughed over to get his side back in contention. Brown then scored a breakaway try in the dying seconds of the half to send his side in with a 20-6 lead.

Leigh started the second half fluently with Clare’s second try in the corner after a flowing move before Harrison Hansen scythed over. Brown completed his hat-trick by the flag and Gregg McNally then added their eighth try of the evening.

But Halifax stuck to their task well and prevented any further scores in the last 18 minutes.

Antoni Maria was Man of the Match as he continued his fine run of form.

Leigh Centurions Head Coach Neil Jukes said: “It wasn’t a polished performance in attack. We scored 40pts but it could have been more. There is so much anxiety and nervousness in these games and there was a lot of pressure for us to win tonight.

“Defensively we worked hard for one another. To concede just one try highlighted some defensive improvements and we proved that we have worked hard in the right areas, but when we get our opportunities in attack we have to be more ruthless and take our chances.”

Before the game Atelea Vea was awarded the LCTV Player of the Year in memory of Tommy Sale MBE.
