London 4 – 41 Leigh

Leigh Centurions achieved their twin objectives on a successful Friday night trip to the capital.

They had to not only win the game against a Broncos side that had performed highly creditably both in the Championship and Qualifiers but also by a margin of 28pts to stay firmly in contention for a home game in the MPG.

A seven-try victory, achieved in some style, satisfied both aims and rewarded the magnificent 400-strong travelling army of supporters for their loyalty and dedication.

Leigh will play the losers of the Catalans- Widnes game at LSV next Saturday (3-15pm) in the MPG unless the game is a draw, in which case they will travel to Perpignan.

Leading 12-0 at half-time at the Ealing Trailfinders Sports Ground, with tries by Matty Fleming and the outstanding Harrison Hansen, Leigh stretched their advantage to 22-0 with further scores by Sam Hopkins and James Clare.

But when Matt Gee cut through to score for the Broncos in the 64th minute there was still a lot of work to do for Neil Jukes’s side.

They finished in fluent style as Ben Reynolds, Josh Drinkwater and Antoni Maria all went over in the last ten minutes, Reynolds taking his goals tally to six and Drinkwater wrapping up a satisfying night’s work with a drop-goal.

Leigh Centurions Head Coach Neil Jukes said: “Everybody was talking about the deficit in points, and trying to make sure that other than a freaky result in France, we try and play that last game for our lives, in front of our own families and on our own pitch.

“We couldn’t do any more than what we asked the players to do. To put those points on them at their place and defend like we did is really pleasing.

“It takes us into that final with a bit of momentum and a bit of confidence. But whoever we play it is going to be something new for me.”
