London 30 – 40 Leigh

Leigh Centurions defied sweltering conditions in the capital to record their ninth successive victory and their third in five weeks over the Broncos.

Late tries by Liam Hood and Peter Matautia finally settled a breathless game of twelve tries at Ealing Trailfinders.

Rhys Williams opened the Broncos’ account but Rhys Evans responded with a long range try and skipper Harrison Hansen got the visitors in front after great approach play by Peter Matautia. In a fast moving first half the Broncos drew level when Alex Walker went under the posts on the last tackle. But just before halftime Craig Hall’s try and Ben Reynolds’ third conversion gave Leigh an 18-12 interval lead.

Matty Gee’s converted try soon after the resumption restored parity before Leigh looked to have taken control with quick fire tries by Craig Hall, a long range interception that took his tally to ten in his last five games and Micky Higham, his first of the season, both converted by Reynolds.

But Leigh were short handed when Drew Hutchison was sin binned for a professional foul and James Meadows took full advantage to reduce the arrears to just six points.

Reynolds kept his nerve to calmly land a 30 metre penalty but the Broncos were back in contention when Sadiq Adebyi went over with ten minutes remaining.

With the game on a knife edge Liam Hood fought his way over for his eighth try in his last seven games but Reynolds was unable to land the touch line conversion to leave the gap at just six points.

Jarrod Sammut failed to get ten metres with his restart kick and Leigh capitalised with Matautia scoring the clinching try in the corner to send the travelling fans into ecstasy. Though Reynolds’ conversion hit the upright Leigh had a ten point cushion in the tense closing stages.
