Featherstone 20 – 42 Leigh

Leigh Centurions earned their 11th successive win on a warm and sunny evening at the LD Nutrition Stadium.

In a vital game in the Betfred Championship Leigh avenged their early season home defeat at the hands over Rovers at LSV.

Leigh took an 18-4 lead into halftime despite conceding an early try and having precious little possession or territory in the opening stages. They survived several anxious moments in the second half to come away with the spoils.

Josh Walters scored for Rovers after a Martyn Ridyard kick to the cornet was knocked back by Luke Briscoe after only five minutes.

Jack Owens opened Leigh’s account in virtually their first attack with Ben Reynolds converting from the touch line.

Liam Hood cut through from dummy half shortly after coming on the field and Ben Crooks went over on the right to complete another sustained attack for a converted try. Right on the hooter Reynolds added a penalty in front of the posts.

Rovers dominated the start of the second half and Matty Wildie hauled them back into contention with a close range try that Ian Hardman converted. Luke Briscoe then had a try disallowed for a forward pass.

But Leigh, playing downhill, hit back when Drew Hutchison cut through to create a converted try for Nathan Mason. Rovers kicked out the restart on the full and Leigh made them pay when Crooks sliced over for his second try with Reynolds’ fifth goal opening up a 30-10 lead.

But Rovers stayed in the game when Walters completed a sustained passing move with his second try midway through the second half. And when Josh Hardcastle crashed over on the right in his side’s next attack the home side trailed by only ten points.

But skipper Harrison Hansen sealed Leigh nerves to complete a length of the field set finishing off a Greg Richards break to send the large travelling support wild.

Reynolds set the seal on the win with a last minute try which he converted for a personal 18pt haul.
