Andy Thornley Extends Centurions Stay

Leigh Centurions are delighted to confirm that Andy Thornley has re-signed for the 2020 season.

Thornley – whose brother Iain has also committed to the club for 2020 – is in his second stint at Leigh having signed from Swinton Lions in November last year.

“I’m made up to have re-signed for next year,” he said. “I’m a big believer in Duffs (Leigh head coach John Duffy) and his staff. They have a vision for the club and I’m grateful to be a part of it.

“Playing in front of the Leigh faithful, old friends and my brother last year reignited a passion for rugby I thought I was losing so I jumped at the chance to play another year.

“I said to John at the start of last year that I wanted to finish my career being able to look in the mirror and know I’ve given everything to achieve something. I think Leigh is the only place I can push myself to do this.”

Forward Thornley started 17 games last season, coming off the bench a further seven times and scoring seven tries. His effort and versatility are attributes that head coach John Duffy loves.

Mr Duffy said: “Andy is a great all-rounder – a tough competitor who can play anywhere. He has played in a variety of positions through the season and is one of those players who you can put anywhere and you know he will do a job for you. He’s a good guy to have in your squad and is the kind of player I like to watch.”

The 30-year-old first played for Leigh between 2011 and 2014, making 73 appearances including the Northern Rail Cup wins of 2011 and 2013. He is the proud holder of #HN1344.

Thornley played for Duffy when he was coach at Swinton and the pair know each other well due to their connections with the Ashton Bears community club. After progressing through the ranks at Wigan Warriors, he went onto play for Salford and North Wales on loan either side of a stint at Whitehaven. He has played more than 200 games at Championship level and knows all about the challenges posed by this intense competition.

Andy Thornley will be sponsored by ASK Platt Office Supplies.
