Cory Paterson joined in some exalted company with his four-try performance against Workington Town in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup tie last Saturday.
The Australian became only the sixth forward in Leigh history to score four tries in a game for the Club.
Billy Smith twice scored five tries in a game playing in the forwards in the early years of the Northern Union. Smith, who converted into the pack after first appearing on the wing scored five tries in Leigh’s win at Liverpool City in the 1906-07 season and followed suit in the home game against Keighley the following season.
Dicky Prescott, a second row forward, scored four tries in Leigh’s Challenge Cup victory over Seaton at Mather Lane in the 1935-36 season.
The great second row forward Mick Martyn ws next to achieve the feat, scoring four tries in the Lancashire Cup-tie against Lancashire County Amateurs in the 1955-56 season.
That was where it stayed until Simon Baldwin and Andy Isherwood each scored four tries from the pack in the 2002 season.
Baldwin’s four tries came in the home game against Hunslet at Hilton Park (actually played in Dec 2001 as the season began in December at that time). In July 2002 Isherwood came off the bench to appear in the pack and scored four tries in the home game against Whitehaven.
