Peter Matautia and Kyle Lovett both notched braces as the Centurions ended a run of four successive Betfred Championship defeats with a convincing performance against Dewsbury Rams at LSV.

Man of the Match Matautia was outstanding in his fullback role, scoring two first half tries and organising the sterling defensive effort.

Despite having several long spells of pressure the Rams were unable to pierce a determined home rearguard as Leigh built on their battling cup win at Batley to help re-build confidence among the group.

Captain Harrison Hansen, playing in the back row, also went over in the first half while Lovett’s first tries for the Centurions came in a three-minute spell after the interval. Ben Crooks notched the sixth and final try following Ben Reynolds’s astute kick through.

The sun shone and the North Stand was in fine voice, the volume rising in support of the home side to acknowledge their obvious desire and commitment to keep the visitors’ score to nil.

This despite playing 11 against 12 for seven minutes in the second half as referee Gareth Hewer sin-binned three players following a flare-up, including two from the home side, before later sin-binning a second Dewsbury player.

Leigh Centurions caretaker coach Kieron Purtill said: “I’m very happy with that performance. That’s two games running where we haven’t conceded a try. The players have worked hard in training and are getting their rewards on game day.

“The hunger the players showed to defend their try-line was the most pleasing aspect of the game for me and going forward we scored some good tries.

“Peter Matautia was outstanding and is finding his groove but as I said in the changing room afterwards I thought several players had their best games in a Leigh jersey today.”
