Leigh Centurions finished the regular Betfred Championship season in fourth place after their defeat in Canada.

Featherstone Rovers’ home defeat at the hands of Toulouse Olympique earlier in the day left them two points behind the Centurions in fifth place and the two sides will now meet in the Elimination Play-Off at LSV next Sunday (6.30pm).

York City Knights, now confirmed in third, will travel to play Toulouse Olympique on Saturday in the Qualifying Semi-Final. The winners of the game will be away to Toronto Wolfpack in week two with a place in the grand final as the reward for the victors. The losers will be at home to the winners of the Leigh-Fev game.

Leigh conceded four tries in each half as they slipped to defeat at the Lamport Stadium.

Josh McCrone opened the scoring in the 12th minute and Hakim Miloudi sliced through midway through the first half. Gareth O’Brien, who also kicked seven goals in total, scored the third try from the re-start before Matty Russell added a fourth. Kevin Brown went under the posts for the visitors with Martyn Ridyard, playing his 250th game for the club, adding the conversion.

Trailing 24-6 at half-time Leigh fell further behind when O’Brien tagged on a penalty early in the second half.

It took the Wolfpack until nearly the midway point of the second half before McCrone added his second try.

Further tries by Joe Mellor and Liam Kay opened up a 40-6 lead before Ryan Brierley scored in the left corner for Leigh, Ridyard hitting his second conversion.

Leigh old boy Bob Beswick, not named on the original team sheet, added the final try of the game on the hooter as Toronto completed the regular season with 26 wins from 27 defeats, their only defeat coming against Toulouse in France.

Toronto finished 12pts clear of second placed Toulouse and are clearly red-hot favourites to win the grand final, especially with home advantage, but they will be keen to wipe out the memory of their dramatic 4-2 defeat at the hands of London Broncos in last year’s Million Pound Game.
