Ben Hellewell (11) of Leigh Centurions goes over for a try

Leigh Centurions go into Sunday’s Betfred Super League clash with Wakefield Trinity looking for their first win of the season.

The team are under the charge of interim head coach Kurt Haggerty following the departure of John Duffy on Wednesday. A former Leigh player, Haggerty has a wealth of rugby league coaching experience having played 163 times in his club career and he also had a stint as assistant coach of Toronto Wolfpack.

Leigh go into Sunday’s game which kicks off at 3pm on the back of a disappointing defeat at Hull KR last weekend while Trinity have enjoyed a recent upturn in fortunes with back-to-back wins over Huddersfield Giants and Hull KR.

Leigh’s last victory over Wakefield came in a memorable Challenge Cup clash in 2015, when Centurions came from 22-0 down to win 36-30. Interim head coach Haggerty played in that game which saw tries from Ryan Brierley, Jonny Pownall, Bob Beswick, Sam Hopkins, Tom Armstrong and Oliver Wilkes as well as six goals from Martyn Ridyard.

Interim Head Coach Kurt Haggerty’s comments

“For me personally it has been a chaotic 24 to 48 hours but we’re all ok going into Wakefield.”

“I’ll look to make some changes but nothing drastic while I get a feel for the squad from a Head Coach point of view.”

“We want to win the game and we want a performance. We’re going to look to play a little bit more and be more energetic. But we need to get some energy back into the team. We’ve put things in place so we can compete and we’re not too far off a win.”

“The lads who will be involved are ready to play.”
