The Centurions travel to West Yorkshire this week as they face off against Batley Bulldogs in the eleventh round of the Betfred Championship. The match will take place at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium on Monday 16thMay, kicking off at 7:45pm with live coverage being shown on Premier Sports.
The hosts will be looking to carry on their strong run of form – the Bulldogs are unbeaten in their last five games, winning four of those matches. Leigh themselves are on a five-match winning run, conceding only 24 points in those games. The Centurions will be looking to keep building momentum after booking their place in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup final at the end of the month.
The two sides played out a classic at Mount Pleasant 18 years ago on the last day of the National League One season. A win away at Batley would see the Centurions crowned champions of the league that year. After romping into a 23-6 lead in the second half, Leigh were made to sweat as Batley fought back to cut the score line back to 23-22 with all the momentum behind the home side. A mistake from the kick off allowed the Centurions to secure the win in the most dramatic fashion.
Highlights of that game can be watched below:
“We gave Blake (Ferguson) every opportunity last week, but I feel he needed a bit more work in his legs. This week it’s the same situation, we’re giving him every chance to get in the squad.”
“We lost James McDonnell back to Wigan, meaning someone will have to come back into the squad. One of those fighting for that spot is Mark Ioane – alongside Luis Roberts and Ata Hingano.”
Mark Ioane is almost back to full fitness and could be in consideration of returning to the Centurions squad. After missing out on making his debut last week, Blake Ferguson could be in line to make his Leigh debut this week. The Centurions are only missing Chris Green through injury, otherwise every other player is available for selection.
The man leading the officiating team for this one will be referee, Ben Thaler. Thaler’s last game in charge of a Centurions fixture came last season, as Leigh were edged out by Wigan Warriors 16-30 at Leigh Sports Village.
