Introducing The Leigh Centurions Business Directory

LEIGH Centurions have broken more new ground this season by producing an exclusive business directory.

Many local businesses and high profile companies have been magnificently supportive of this exciting and innovative corporate venture that will instantly benefit so many people within the local community and beyond.

The directory offers a wide range of top class professional services spanning airport travel to car valeting.

It can be downloaded from the club’s website by

clicking here
.

The directory will soon be available in hard copy form, with 4000 copies having
been ordered and will then be distributed to supporters, major sponsors and corporate investors
at a number of events starting with the Batley game on May 1st.

Thanks go to all the great companies who took part and helped contribute to the business directory’s success.

Leigh Centurions’ owner Derek Beaumont salutes all the businesses for their support.

Derek writes: "I would like to give a massive thank you to all the businesses who have shown loyalty to our club by enabling my idea to come to fruition at the same time as generating much need revenue for the Club.

"If our supporters are loyal to the businesses that support our Club, they will
continue and grow."

Toulouse 10 – 8 Leigh Centurions

Toulouse Olympique 10
Leigh Centurions 8

Leigh Centurions crashed out of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, beaten by the French champions and Championship One newcomers Toulouse Olympique at Stade Ernest Argeles, Blagnac.

The prolific Toulouse fullback Mark Khierallah was the match-winner with a penalty goal eleven minutes from time as an electrical storm flashed over the stadium and the rain bucketed down.

The Centurions never got their usual fluent attacking game into gear and paid the penalty for a lethargic first half display as the home side deservedly went in leading 8-0 at the interval.

Prop forward Bastien Canet scored the only try of a tight first half in the fifth minute after Australian halfback Jonathon Ford created the opportunity. Khierallah added the conversion and a penalty on 13 minutes.

Sam Hopkins drove over from dummy half for a try three minutes after the break for his tenth try of the season. Martyn Ridyard kicked the conversion and after turning down two kickable penalty opportunities levelled the scores with a penalty just before the hour-mark.

Reni Maitua was held up over the try-line and Jonny Pownall looked to have scored the match-winning try only to be recalled for obstruction in the build-up.

And in a dramatic finish played in a storm of Biblical proportions Khierallah kept his nerve to land the match-winning penalty as Toulouse held out to record a famous victory and progress into the last 16 of the competition.

The draw for the sixth round will be broadcast on the BBC4 Today programme live at 8-30am next Thursday.

Leigh Centurions are delighted to confirm that the Club has agreed with Hull FC to extend Richard Whiting’s loan deal until the end of the current season. Richard has also agreed a contract with Leigh Centurions until the end of the 2017 season.

A vastly experienced former England international and a huge crowd favourite with the Hull FC fans, Whiting has made eight appearances for the Club during his two month loan spell, making his debut against London Broncos in February and earning Heritage Number 1405.

Whiting is a vastly experienced and highly respected player who cut short a scholarship with Barnsley FC to begin his professional career with Featherstone Rovers, earning the accolade of National League One Young Player of the Year in 2003. He joined Hull in 2004 and soon became a huge favourite of the fans for his ability, commitment and his consistent and versatile performances.

He famously scored an opportunist try in Hull’s thrilling 25-24 Challenge Cup Final victory over Leeds at the Millennium Stadium in 2005 and was in the Black and Whites side defeated by St Helens in the 2006 Grand Final at Old Trafford.

He also made three international appearances for England between 2004 and 2006 and in his 14-year professional career has made 290 senior appearances and scored 85 tries, also kicking 36 goals and two drop-goals.

In 2014 he was granted a ten year testimonial with Hull FC and enjoyed a benefit game against Featherstone Rovers. He has also been involved coaching Hull FC’s youth team and having regularly featured in supporters’ Player of the Year awards is widely respected in the city.

Last season he scored three tries in 17 appearances for Hull FC, to take his tally for the club to 78 tries in 257 games.

Leigh Centurions Head Coach Neil Jukes said: “Richard is a great professional and has proved himself to be a big asset during his time with us. He is a very versatile player and has really enjoyed his time here. I know that in one way he will be sad to leave Hull after giving many years of valuable service to them but he is excited by the challenge at Leigh Centurions and ready to write a new chapter into his illustrious playing career.

“When he first joined us I said he hadn’t joined us as a stop-gap but was a player of genuine quality who came highly recommended as a top professional who was low maintenance. He quickly adapted to being at our Club and through working hard and buying in to what we want to achieve we now have an end result that suits all parties.”

Leigh Centurions Owner Derek Beaumont said: “I am really pleased we have been able to secure Richard’s services and thank Motu Tony and the Hull club for assisting with this. Richard is the consummate professional and has really bought into what we are trying to do at the Club.

“He is well respected and well liked and has already earned the respect and praise of our fans with his performances on the field. He can now completely focus on assisting us obtaining Super League status so that he is back where he has always been as a player next year.

“I would also like to thank Karl Harrison for his professional assistance in putting this together. I am sure this news will be as popular with our fans as it is in the changing room and I have no doubt that the Hull FC faithful will wish Richard well in his new journey and keep an eye on how he gets on after his great service to their club.”

AB Sundecks Donate Centurions’ Summer Bash Shirt Sponsorship To Team Isaac Charity

In a gesture of great generosity, Leigh Centurions’ main club sponsor AB Sundecks have donated their space on the front of the Summer Bash Special Limited Edition shirt to the Team Isaac charity.

Team Isaac was a fighting fund set up for the nephew of former player Kurt Haggerty who tragically passed away last week. This is a fund close to Leigh Centurions Owner Derek Beaumont’s heart and despite the sad passing of young Isaac there is still an opportunity to raise funds in his memory, to assist the Alder Hay Children’s Hospital’s in house Leukaemia  research programme. The research is undertaken specifically by the three consultants that looked after Isaac tirelessly throughout his short life. In addition to the exposure of the Team Isaac logo, Leigh Centurions will also donate the profit made from the shirt sales to the fighting fund.

Derek Beaumont said: “ I have been friends with Gareth Haggerty (Isaac’s father) since my first stint at Leigh when he played at Salford, as he is close friends to my employee and friend Sean Richardson. Naturally I was devastated along with everyone else to learn of Isaac’s battle with Leukaemia. When I attended Isaac’s funeral which was a really touching and difficult occasion,  it came to me whilst I was sitting in church that I could do something to help further the cause that Isaac will be remembered by, and that will raise awareness of such a difficult illness, and raise funds towards finding more ways to minimize or hopefully cure it. We have already had a large amount of media attention with the shirt designs and I hope this continues more so raising the profile of the fighting fund”.

Gareth Haggerty said: “The support we received from people for Isaac was truly amazing and was perhaps highlighted by the huge amount of lanterns lit in his memory. I can’t thank Derek enough for his support, not just for the fund but for me personally. Myself and Claire are really proud to see Isaac’s fighting fund logo on the Summer Bash shirt. It is something we will keep and treasure. It is great that Isaac can continue to help raise funds to help others and we are extremely grateful to all those people who will buy the shirt which will raise much necessary funds. I would also like to thank the Leigh fans for their tremendous show of respect to Isaac with their minute’s applause at the Whitehaven game on Sunday.”

The deadline for ordering the shirt, which will not go on general sale and will only be made to order, has been extended to 12 noon on Friday 15th April. This is to allow more opportunities for spectators to place their orders. The shirtwill also be worn at one of the 8s qualifier games towards the end of the season. To reserve a shirt a 50% non-refundable deposit is required.
